Night Qualification

In order to fly under the JAR rules at night (defined as the hours between 30 minutes after sunset to 30 minutes before sunrise) you must hold a Night Qualification. Completing this rating either during or after your PPL training will allow you to fly with or without passengers at night.

Pre-Entry Requirements

  • Hold a JAR Private Pilots Licence
  • Have completed at least 5 hours' night training, of which 3 hours is to be 'dual' instructional training, 1 hour of this 'dual' training is to be a cross-country flight
  • Completed in the 5 hours of night training at least 5 takeoffs and landings to a full stop at night.

The Course

The CAA/JAR night qualification takes on average 2 to 3 nights to complete depending on the individual's experience. There is no examination and the rating is valid for life.
